Pam Frampton, The Telegram’s associate managing editor, is one of two winners of the 2013 Excellence in Journalism Award from the Canadian Bar Association — Newfoundland and Labrador Branch (CBA-NL), it was announced today.

Frampton’s husband, Glenn Payette of CBC, is the second winner.

Frampton won for a two-part series of columns on cameras in the courts — the first called "Judgment call," the second "The ball's in your court." The series ran March 24 and March 31 of 2012 in The Telegram.

Payette won for his series of segments on the acquittal of Raymond Gerald Newman who had been charged with murder. The segments aired in November and December of 2012 on CBC’s Here and Now.

The CBA-NL also announced the 2013 Distinguished Public Service Award recipient is Thomas Williams, Q.C., of the firm O’Dea Earle.

A news release states Williams’ public service and volunteer activities throughout his career have made him an ideal candidate for this award. The Distinguished Public Service Award recognizes a lawyer’s contribution to community service. The public is invited to nominate lawyers in the province that have proven to be strong volunteers and give back to their community.

The awards presentation will take place at the CBA-NL Awards dinner Friday, May 10 at Bally Haly Golf and Country Club in St. John’s.
