Police would not confirm whether it was a man or a woman who was killed in a single-vehicle accident on the hill that links the communities of Cape St. George and Mainland on Wednesday afternoon.

But RCMP Cpl. Steve Henley did confirm that one person, the driver and lone occupant of the car is dead. Henley said the vehicle left the road and went down a steep embankment, then caught fire.

After the accident was reported to police at about 4:30 p.m., members of the Bay St. George detachment responded to the scene and were assisted in their investigation by Traffic Services West, with accident reconstruction taking place well into the evening. The recovery of the vehicle took place into the night.

The Cape St. George Fire Department responded to the accident, which occurred on Garden Hill, about three to four kilometres from the turnoff into Boutte de Cape Park.

Henley said the body of the victim will be sent for an autopsy and police will continue the investigation.
