A woman suspected of stealing another woman’s medication after refusing to let her out of a car appeared in provincial court in St. John’s this morning.

Rebecca Kelland of Portugal Cove faces almost a dozen charges in connection with five separate incidents.

The most serious happened at around 11:30 a.m. on July 9, after she reportedly picked up a 55-year-old woman in front of Iris Kirby House, a woman’s shelter in the west end of the city. Once the woman was inside the vehicle, police say Kelland refused to let her out.

Kelland was said to have finally let the woman go on Southside Road, but not before making the woman give up her purse, which contained medication and other personal items.

Kelland has been charged with robbery, forcible confinement, breach of probation and breach of undertaking in connection with the incident.

The 24-year-old was in custody at the Women’s Correctional facility in Clarenville when those charges were laid.

She had been arrested and jailed July 14 on two counts of possessing illegal drugs and breaching probation.

She also faces charges of stealing from the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation on July 28, 2012; breaking into a Jehovah Witness building on Topsail Road and breaching probation on May 4 of this year; and failing to attend court on July 11 of this year.

Kelland agreed to go back to jail until her next court date on Thursday.
