The driver of a sport utility vehicle is dead following a collision Friday with a transport truck on the Trans Canada Highway near Springdale.
The accident happened that morning approximately 12 kilometres west of the turnoff to Baie Verte. On Saturday, Springdale RCMP confirmed in a news release that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Nobody else was in the SUV at the time of the accident.
The driver of the transport truck was treated at a hospital in Springdale for non-life threatening injuries.
The accident caused a lengthy traffic delay on Friday, as both lanes of the TCH were closed for approximately three hours. One lane was reopened in the early afternoon, and both lanes resumed handling traffic by 6 p.m.
Police are investigating the incident. The identity of the deceased has not been released.
Springdale RCMP says the section of Trans Canada Highway from Springdale Junction to Birchy Narrows has been closed indefinitely.
Springdale RCMP are advising that the Trans Canada Highway is now open to one lane only going from Springdale Junction to Birchy Narrows.
For the time being, traffic will alternate between east bound and west bound, and motorists are advised to exercise caution and reduce speed in the area.
The Springdale RCMP is advising that, due to a motor vehicle collision, both west bound and east bound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway have been shutdown in the area of Baie Verte Junction.
The shutdown could last up to three hours.
The RCMP is not releasing any further details at this time.
