Justice Minister Darin King announced this morning that the government has awarded a contract to Vancouver-based Parkin Architects for design and site selection on a new prison for the province.
The new facility would replace Her Majesty’s Penitentiary — parts of which are well over 100 years old, and advocates say it’s desperately in need of replacement.
“The time has come to replace Her Majesty’s Penitentiary and while this is the first step, it is an important one,” King said in a news release. “Parkin Architects Limited has considerable experience in designing correctional facilities and I look forward to seeing their concepts of what a new penitentiary for Newfoundland and Labrador will potentially look like.”
The work by Parkin will include a conceptual floor plan, proposed site location, implementation schedule, and an estimate of the cost.
The government news release did not say how long it will take to complete the initial design work.
