Four men are facing charges after the RCMP and RNC seized 50 pounds of Canadian Currency — estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars— along with about five pounds of marijuana during an enforcement effort Thursday evening known as Operation Backstop.

Terrence Gallant and Bruce Hickey, both of Benoit’s Cove, were charged and released on Thursday for a court appearance at a later date.

Jean-Paul Mondoux and Andre Sequin of Ontario will attend a bail hearing today in Corner Brook provincial court.

The RCMP federal policing operations west in Corner Brook, in co-operation with Corner Brook RNC, conducted a takedown and searches Thursday in conjunction with an investigation ongoing since 2012.

The RCMP Serious and Organized Crime Unit in Cornwall, Ont., was also involved in the investigation.

Charges against the men include conspiracy to traffic in a controlled substance, possession of property obtained by crime, money laundering, and possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance.
