Retired Gen. Rick Hillier was invested into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador today during a ceremony at Government House in recognition of his contributions to the province.

“General Hillier has dedicated his life to serving his province and his country,” said Lt.-Gov. Frank Fagan. “For this, he is truly deserving of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador – the province’s highest honour.”

Premier Tom Marshall was also at today’s ceremony and expressed his thanks and congratulations to Hillier.

“There is no doubt that through his selfless dedication and commitment to the people of this province, General Hillier embodies the true spirit of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Marshall. “I would like to thank General Hillier for his tremendous contributions and congratulate him on receiving this great honour.”

Hillier is one of eight recipients of the 2013 Order of Newfoundland and Labrador but was unable to attend the induction ceremony on Feb. 7, at which time the following individuals received the Order: Bridget Foster, Dr. Jane Stuart Green, Margaret Kearney, Colleen Kennedy, Gilbert Linstead, Sara Rita Sexton, and Kevin St. George. Further information on these individuals can be found at www.gov.nl.ca/onl

Members of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador are selected by an advisory council following the review of all nominations received. Nominations for the next induction closed on Jan. 31, 2014.
