A duck in pursuit of her ducklings crossing the west-bound lane on Pitt’s Memorial Drive near an embankment above Southside Road caused a multi-vehicle accident around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The driver of the lead vehicle in a line of traffic slammed on her brakes to avoid hitting the duck, which resulted in a five-vehicle, chain-reaction collision. There were no serious injuries as a result of the accident.

Two of the responding RNC street patrol officers, Const. Mike Hollett and Const. Devon Thompson took their duties to preserve and protect seriously and rescued the six ducklings from a concrete drainage culvert adjacent to the eastbound lane. City of St. John’s Humane Services employees also showed up to assist in the duckling rescue.

Thompson climbed down an inside ladder to the running water and used a humane services dip net to corrall the ducklings one by one and passed them up through the drain opening to the human services employees.

The six ducklings were taken to a safe environment to be cared for until they can be released into the waters of Bowring Park, where it was believed the mother duck originated.
