Wedgewood Park’s new recreation centre will be named for former mayor Paul Reynolds.

The City of St. John’s announced Friday at the official sod-turning for the $31.9-million facility that it will be known as the Paul Reynolds Community Centre.

Reynolds, who died in 2011, was mayor of Wedgewood Park before the town amalgamated with St. John’s in 1992. Reynolds also served on St. John’s city council.

His family was on hand at a ceremony Friday marking the start of construction on the facility, which began June 13.

The city expects the facility to be open to the public in the fall of 2016.

The recreation centre will include a lane pool, leisure pool, 6,700-square foot gym, daycare, seniors’ area and an outdoor playground, among other multi-use spaces.
