Man dies in moose-vehicle collision on Southern Shore Highway

A 34-year-old man died Sunday night after swerving his vehicle to avoid a moose on the Southern Shore Highway, Route 10.

According to the Ferryland RCMP, the driver hit the moose and his vehicle overturned into a northbound ditch around 9:50 p.m. in an area known as Long Pond.  

The Witless Bay Fire Department and paramedics attended the scene, but the lone occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. A section of the road between Goulds and Bay Bulls was closed for several hours after the accident.

The crash remains under investigation and the name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
