A 53-year-old man from the Stephenville-Kippens area died Sunday night when his vehicle plunged over a cliff on Route 460 in Campbell’s Creek.
The man was the only occupant of the vehicle, which landed in the water in St. George’s Bay.
RCMP Sgt. Cathy Whitehead of the Bay St. George detachment said the accident occurred at about 8:50 p.m.
Whitehead said the man’s body was recovered at about 11:15 p.m.
“We had to use a fisherman’s boat. We had some assistance from the community in going to get him,” she said, adding that going by water was the only option available.
The RCMP was also assisted by the Marine Institute Safety and Emergency Response Training Centre and the Stephenville Emergency Response Unit’s search and rescue team.
The vehicle is still in the water and Whitehead is uncertain of what will happen with it.
“We don’t need it for investigational purposes and there’s no collision on it and it will cost thousands to remove.”
She said what is done with it is kind of a “who’s going to do what with it” question.
Whitehead said police are investigating to determine what caused the vehicle to go off the road, and there will be an autopsy conducted on the man.
His name is not being released at this time.
