Innovation, Business and Rural Development Minister Susan Sullivan announced that the government is spending $4.6 million to expand broadband access to 5,000 new households.

Sullivan said that once the money is spent, 98 per cent of the population of Newfoundland and Labrador will have access to broadband services.

Sullivan said that broadband is vital for education, health care and business in the province.

The latest chunk of money is the third round of the Rural Broadband Initiative. In total, the government has spent $34 million since 2003.

The current announcement was done in conjunction with EION Inc., Bell Aliant, Burgeo Broadcast Systems and Great Northern Wireless.
