Forest fire near Thorburn Road in St. John’s

A water bomber and helicopter were deployed to help tame a forest fire burning near Thorburn Road in St. John’s early Monday evening.

Firefighters with the Department of Natural Resources and the St. John’s Regional Fire Department accessed the back yard of an auto repair business to fight flames from the ground.

The water bomber came on the scene first and was followed by the helicopter, which initially flew over the area to survey the fire before it returned with a bucket of water.

A large plume of smoke was visible roadside along Thorburn Road near the municipal boundary between St. John’s and St. Philip’s. It was less visible after the helicopter dropped its water.

On Monday, the provincial government announced it was implementing a ban on open fires on forest land because of dry weather and hot temperatures.
