Two people using the same vehicle were charged with impaired driving Saturday night following a collision at a St. John’s intersection.
An 18-year-old woman has been released, but the 23-year-old man remains in custody as of Sunday morning and is facing several additional charges related to what happened following the two-vehicle accident.
According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, a vehicle waiting for a traffic light to change was hit by a car attempting to make a right turn from Topsail Road onto Brookfield Road.
At that point, the woman was driving the car, but her male passenger took control of the wheel following the collision and hit the vehicle a second time before they both ran away.
Police caught up with the pair within minutes. Both are charged with impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident. The woman is also charged with failing the breathalyzer. The man is facing additional charges of refusing to provide a breath sample, obstruction, resisting arrest and assaulting a peace officer. He’s also charged with three counts of breaching court orders.
Police said there were no injuries and that damage to the vehicles was moderate.
