The Conception Bay South Soccer Association is suspending operations at the Topsail soccer field where a young boy was stabbed Thursday night until further notice.
In a statement posted to its website, the association expressed its concerns for all people impacted by the traumatizing incident.
“CBS Soccer is shocked and saddened by an incident at Topsail Field Thursday evening that sent one of our young players to hospital,” the association said in its statement. “The thoughts and prayers of the association are with the young player and his family and friends. CBS Soccer is working with the RNC and the Town of Conception Bay South with regards to this incident.”
Local schools have crisis counsellors on site to talk with students still coming to terms with the horrific incident. Holy Family School in Paradise is expected to be among those schools — the 11-year-old stabbing victim reportedly attends that school. He was transported to a St. John’s hospital last night and was in serious condition as of 11 p.m. Thursday.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has a suspect in custody, but no charges have been laid. Witnesses told The Telegram the male who stabbed the boy was likely in his late teens.
The soccer association said its office will remain closed Friday and that parents looking to retrieve items from the field in Topsail will be able to do so once RNC investigators release the crime scene.
