If there’s such thing as a photo finish at a spelling bee it happened today at Holy Heart Theater as two final contestants battled words for the top prize of the 4th Annual Telegram Spelling Bee.

Mattie Cull - 11 years old and of Roddickton’s Cloud River Academy - spelled the word “adhocracy “ correctly to win this year’s Spelling Bee.

How did she do it?

“A lot of practicing. A lot,” Mattie said.

The spelling bee went 17 rounds and in the last round Mattie faced off against 2014’s champion, Emily Hynes. Mattie and Emily went back and forth trying to pin down the correct spelling of a final word and a shot at the title three times but on the fourth go around, Mattie took the title of Telegram Spelling Bee champion.

Mattie won $2000, a trophy and other prizes for her spelling attributes. Emily got $500 as the runner up.

Mattie now qualifies for the Scripps National Spelling Bee near Washington, D.C.
