Police are now canvassing the public for information after a 21-year-old man was seriously assaulted with a weapon at a St. John’s house party Friday night.

Police say the assault took place on Mahogany Place in Southlands.

The Telegram was on the scene of the attack.

A witness at the scene who knew the victim and who wished to remain unidentified, told The Telegram that the man was a resident of the home in the neighborhood where a party was taking place.

The victim was apparently trying to eject some of the partygoers when the situation turned violent and the assault happened.

The witness said it appears the man was assaulted with a beer bottle and received several lacerations or stab wounds to the head, neck and body area and that several people were involved in the incident.

Police also spoke to the same witness who spoke to The Telegram.

The RNC has now made a post on their Facebook page about the incident. They say they are looking to speak with every person who was in attendance at the house party on Mahogany Place in Southlands.

They are asking any potential witnesses or persons with relevant information to call 729-8000, choose option 1 and ask to speak with the major crime unit regarding this matter.

Earlier story:

One man has been taken to hospital following what appears to be a serious assault in the Southlands area of St. John’s late Friday night.

An Eastern Health ambulance and St. John’s Regional fire department rescue truck were seen in front of the home along with two marked patrol vehicles, an unmarked police vehicle and an RNC identification services truck. Two plainclothes officers as well as an identification officer with a camera were also spotted leaving the home. Police also spoke to the same witness who spoke to The Telegram.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary would only confirm that a house party had gotten out of hand at the home and that they were investigating the incident but would give no more details.

It is not believed that the injuries to the victim are life-threatening.
