A 39-year-old man has been arrested for public mischief after the RCMP investigated a supposed attempted murder in Channel-Port-aux-Basques, on the west coast of Newfoundland.

The alleged attempted murder was widely reported in the media, but on Sunday, the RMCP arrested the man who had reported the supposed July 12 stabbing incident.

The man, a resident of Port Aux Basques, has been released on conditions by a peace officer and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Thomas Kavanagh was released from custody on Saturday and the charges against him have been withdrawn from the court.

The investigation is continuing.
