Federal Fisheries Minister Dominic LeBlanc kicked off a busy week for federal politics in the province with an announcement about eelgrass.

The federal government is giving $4.7 million over five years to Memorial University for a project to help restore the Placentia Bay ecosystem, focused on the eelgrass which is important for fish habitat.

LeBlanc said this is part of a $75 million effort to restore coastal ecosystems.

LeBlanc said that the plan is to reseed eelgrass and restore migratory corridors for fish, along with building artificial reefs.

The federal cabinet is holding a retreat in St John's this week, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arriving later today.
