Justice and Public Safety Minister Andrew Parsons said he couldn’t go into specifics of the matter, pending the outcome of the review.

But when The Telegram got Wells on the phone, he said the suspension was based on comments made in the Telegram last week about Muskrat Falls and Ward 1 Coun. Danny Breen.

Wells says he tried to convince Breen to get the city to seek intervenor status in the PUB’s review of the Muskrat Falls project, and Breen brushed him off.

In the wake of his suspension, Wells said that because the Muskrat Falls review was an advisory ad hoc study — not a formal, quasi-judicial regulatory hearing — he didn’t think that it was a big deal that he tried to enjoin the City of St. John’s to participate.

Wells is perhaps best known as the former mayor of St. John’s with a colourful, combative political style. In the lead-up to this year’s municipal election, he has become increasingly vocal about the shortcomings of city councilors — particularly Mayor Dennis O’Keefe, and Breen.

Within municipal politics circles, this is seen as laying the groundwork for a mayoral campaign, although Wells has said he’s still making up his mind about whether to run.
