On Wednesday of this week, the U.S. International Trade Commission unanimously voted 5-0 to overturn duties imposed on Canadian newsprint. There were concerns earlier this year about tariffs being requested by the Donald Trump administration. The American government wanted to impose anti-dumping tariffs that would have amounted to a 22.16 per cent tariff for the Corner Brook mill and a countervailing duty that would have affected the mill with a 9.93 per cent tariff.
Question: Are you confident about the mill’s future after hearing the threat to impose tariffs has been struck down by the U. S. International Trade Commission?
Tiffany Vincent, Corner Brook
I do feel confident about the mill’s future. The reason I feel confident is Corner Brook Pulp and Paper has been around as long as Corner Brook has been and it is one of our biggest employers. My pop is 75 years old and worked in the mill and has everything good to say about the mill. This is good news for the mill and people in the area.
Jason Webb, Corner Brook
Yes, I am. They’re not paying all those tax dollars that is money that can go into the community and other things, and people’s wages can go up. If they did put more taxes on the mill they would probably end up closing because they can’t afford to stay open after a while.
Lucas Penney, Gillams
I do feel confident that the mill is going to be here for a long time and prosper from everything that’s going on around here and I think more people are going to be interested in continuing working there too.
Randy Wells, Corner Brook
That’s good to hear. I think it’s a lot better for the company and Newfoundland that no more taxes won’t be added because it would have been a lot harder and it might have closed. There’d be jobs for nobody and everybody would look at leaving. We need the mill for the jobs to keep us going.
Nelson Butt, Corner Brook
It’s good news. If they were going to tax the mill, which is going to cost more money, it would make the economy a lot more difficult for us. The mill would probably close because I don’t know how much more money the government can keep putting out.
Tony Hunt, Pasadena
All I can say is I hope so. The damn government does what they like. Donald Trump says they’re not getting their fair share but he’s a dictator. The Canadian Prime Minister isn’t going to go up against Trump. Trump got the upper hand, so Canada is going to be forced out of it because Trump is going to do what he wants.
