ST. JOHN’S, NL – Horror stories of Canadians falling sick while travelling and having to pay huge sums of money for treatment are not altogether uncommon.
The Department of Health and Community Services, however, wants to make sure everyone in the province is aware of what is and isn’t covered under the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Care Plan (MCP).
“When leaving the province, it is wise for people and their families to be prepared for the unexpected,” Health and Community Services Minister John Haggie said in a news release on Thursday, March 22.
“Before travelling outside Newfoundland and Labrador, I encourage everyone to learn more about MCP and what services are covered. People can also contact the department’s local MCP offices with questions or for more information.”
While the plan covers people who temporarily leave the province, some hospital-related charges, treatments received in a clinic or some road or air ambulance services may not be covered by MCP, the department cautions.
In such instances, people are responsible for paying those costs themselves.
In addition to MCP coverage, some employer plans provide insurance coverage. Additional insurance can also be purchased through private insurance companies.
