When 10-year-old Cameron Hillier recognized his mom was sick and in trouble, he kept his cool and dialed 911.
The Labrador-Grenfell Health authority issued a release Friday to recognize the heroic efforts of Cameron, who remained calm when he provided the required information to the emergency room nurses until paramedics arrived on scene.
Staff at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony were so impressed with Cameron’s behaviour that they presented him with a certificate for his heroism.
“We encourage anyone involved in an emergency to use the 911 service, which directly connects individuals to emergency response professionals,” said Antionette Cabot, regional director for emergency services for Labrador-Grenfell Health.
“In cases of medical emergencies, paramedics rely on key information provided by individuals, like Cameron, to assist in locating those in need; where they can provide life-saving care. It is important that houses have properly displayed civic addresses for this reason.”
“Cameron did the right thing by calling 911 when he needed emergency help for his mother and most importantly, he stayed calm while in a stressful situation,” said Kerry Power, NL 911 executive director.
“We are so proud of Cameron Hillier and his quick thinking!” Power said.
“Cameron’s cool demeanor allowed him to confidently provide answers to all the 911 call taker’s questions, including the type of emergency, his phone number and his community. By staying calm and answering all questions, Cameron was able to get the help he needed for his mother as quickly as possible.”
