A sign on a Topsail Road business reads "Don’t steal, the government hates competition."

“It's just to give people a thought of the day, a laugh of the week,” Smith said.

The sign is below his company logo at S & S Supply Ltd., an industrial equipment supplier, on Topsail Road. Smith said he’s putting up a new message each week to customers to try to lighten the mood.

Everybody feels they pay too much tax at times, particularly the 16-cent gas tax, he said.

He said the current messaging might be a bit aggressive but his staff and customers like it.

“When I personally travel around the city people say ‘You are the guy with the sign,’” Smith said.

The other side reads “It takes balls to play golf,” Smith said.

He admitted that is walking the line.
