STAG HARBOUR, NL – A man is temporarily staying with relatives and receiving assistance from the Canadian Red Cross following a fire that destroyed his home in the community of Stag Harbour on Fogo Island early Sunday morning.

He is crediting working smoke detectors for allowing him to escape uninjured from the blaze.

Disaster volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross have helped him with emergency purchases, including clothing and food.

The fire was reported shortly after 4 a.m.
