CENTREVILLE-WAREHAM-TRINITY, NL – A municipal habitat stewardship agreement was signed Friday between the Town of Centreville-Wareham-Trinity and the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources.
It brings the number of agreements between the provincial government and towns in Newfoundland and Labrador up to 40.
A ceremony was held in the community to mark the occasion.
The agreement will help protect nesting and staging habitats for ducks and other waterfowl and will add another layer of protection for land located around the municipal water supply.
The municipal habitat stewardship program is unique to Newfoundland and Labrador.
It encourages municipalities to recognize the value of wildlife habitat found within and near municipal planning boundaries and to take an active stewardship role in maintaining their value and integrity.
“The municipal habitat stewardship program clearly demonstrates how partnerships between the provincial government and municipalities can improve protection for sensitive wildlife habitats and encourage residents to support enhancement of natural areas within our communities,” Fisheries and Land Resources Minister Gerry Byrne said in a news release.
Centreville-Wareham-Trinity Coun. Samuel Gibbons called the agreement a significant accomplishment for the town.
“This agreement recognizes our community’s focus on environmental stewardship and provides us with the tools and knowledge to incorporate environmental sustainability in the municipal planning process,” he said.
