The plan to introduce the service was announced Monday night when the city’s 2017 budget was unveiled.
“Automatic garbage actually was one of the most leading issues which came about in our public consultation process,” said Coun. Jonathan Galgay, who introduced the budget. “People have been complaining about the amount of litter in our city. People have complained that the garbage nets don’t work. They really wanted us to take the initiative.
“We have to replace many of our vehicles that pick up garbage, and purchasing new vehicles that are equipped to handle automatic garbage is the right decision to make. If we don’t do it now, I would suggest that the next time we would be able to introduce it would be in about 10 years.”
The service would be rolled out in three phases in different areas of the city. Like in neighbouring communities using automated pickup, residents will be billed for the bins over a period of time.
The city will consult with residents about the new service throughout 2017.
