An inmate at the women’s prison in Clarenville died early Saturday morning after staff responded to what the Department of Justice and Public Safety called an “emergency situation”.

The department confirmed in a statement issued early Saturday evening that staff at the Newfoundland and Labrador Correctional Centre for Women responded to a situation involving a sole inmate Friday afternoon.

According to the statement, the inmate was transported to the Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville, where she died at approximately 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is investigating.

The prison is frequently criticized for being overcrowded.
