ST. JOHNS, NL – A ceremony was held at Government House in St. John’s today, Feb. 22, to present exemplary service medals and bars to 16 members of the Canadian Coast Guard’s Atlantic region.
The awards were presented by the Newfoundland and Labrador Lt.-Gov. Frank Fagan. He did so on behalf of Governor General Julie Payette, who serves as honorary chief commissioner of the coast guard.
The exemplary service medal is part of the Canadian Honours System and recognizes coast guard employees who, in the course of their duties, provide exemplary service in difficult or critical situations.
Canadian Coast Guard employees with a minimum of 20 years of service, including at least 10 of those in a risk environment, are eligible for the award when that service is marked by exemplary conduct.
After 30 years, employees are eligible to receive the bar that attaches to the medal.
