ST. JOHN’S, NL – Two contracts have been awarded for the review of the provincial waste management strategy.

One for roughly $45,000 has been awarded to Amec Foster Wheeler, while the other, for approximately $65,000, has been granted to Maclaren Municipal Consulting.

The review is expected to be completed by late this summer, according to a news release from the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment on Tuesday, March 20.

Waste management technologies and practices adopted throughout Canada and the world have changed since the provincial strategy was implemented over a decade ago, the release stated.

Amec Foster Wheeler has been brought on to assess potential solid waste management technologies that will support the goals and objectives of the strategy.

Maclaren Municipal Consulting, meanwhile, will carry out an operational and financial analysis of the planned waste management systems in the province.

Seven regional service boards have been created to construct, operate and maintain waste management systems in the province so far under the strategy, the release noted.

The upcoming review will assess current plans for implementing the strategy’s regional approach to identify any new opportunities for operational and capital cost savings.

“The award of these two contracts is a demonstration of our government’s continued commitment to improving services related to waste management and moving forward with a long-term plan for solid waste management in Newfoundland and Labrador,” Municipal Affairs and Environment Eddie Joyce said.
