Crown, defence asking for 7.5 years for men involved in C.B.S. death

Two of the men charged in connection with the stabbing death of a Conception Bay South man were in court in St. John’s Thursday morning, sitting next to each other in the dock while their lawyers sat side-by-side in front of them.

Calvin Kenny, 26, is taken back into custody by a sheriff’s officer at provincial court in St. John’s Thursday afternoon. Kenny and co-accused Chesley Lucas, 23, will be back in court Sept. 7, at which time they may be sentenced for their roles in the death of 25-year-old Steven Miller last year.

Chesley Lucas (pictured) and Calvin Kenny are being sentenced together for their roles in the death of Steven Miller last summer. Their lawyers and the Crown have presented a joint submission of 7 1/2 years in prison for each of the men.

Chesley Lucas and Calvin Kenny, both of whom have pleaded guilty to manslaughter, robbery, forcible confinement and arson in connection with the July 30 death of 25-year-old Steven Miller, agree with the Crown’s suggestion of a 7 1/2 year jail sentence. That would include sentences for a number of the charges running concurrently.

There is a publication ban on the evidence and details of the case, given that another co-accused in the case, Paul Connolly, might still face a murder trial. His preliminary inquiry is due to start next month.

A fourth accused man, Kyle Morgan, pleaded guilty earlier this month to being an accessory after the fact in connection with the death, and is awaiting sentencing.

Miller was kidnapped from his Seal Cove home in the early morning hours of July 30, 2016. His body was found at the end of a residential driveway in Kelligrews later that day.

All four accused men were originally charged with murder in connection with Miller’s death.

Lucas and Kenny will be back in court Sept. 7, when Judge Colin Flynn is expected to bring down sentences.
