ST. JOHN’S, NL – The Canadian Union of Public Employees in Newfoundland and Labrador has a new president for the first time in 26 years.

Delegates at the 44th annual division convention in St. John’s elected Sherry Hillier to replace Wayne Lucas today, May 2.

Lucas announced his retirement this week after 40 years in total with the union.

Hillier, a licenced practical nurse who has worked in long-term care for 24 years, has been involved in her local for 20 years as a shop steward, recording secretary, treasurer and president.

She also currently serves as regional vice-president representing Newfoundland and Labrador on CUPE’s national executive board.

CUPE Newfoundland and Labrador represents more than 6,000 public employees in 60 locals.
