Overnight parking in the downtown will be banned starting on Jan. 30.

The city had previously announced its plans for the parking ban, but waited to implement it to give time for residents and the business community to get ready for the ban.

No cars will be allowed to be parked on Duckworth Street, between Cochrane Street and New Gower Street, or on Water Street, between Prescott Street and Waldegrave Street, between 3:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m.

The ban is to allow city crews better access to the downtown streets to allow for better snowclearing.

Those with vehicles caught on the street will have their vehicles towed immediately and hit with a $250 administration fee and $25 impounding fee, which will increase the longer the car is held.

The George Street Association had previously come out against the ban, citing concerns for workers and designated drivers in the downtown. When the ban was first announced, Coun. Debbie Hanlon said there are still plenty of parking spaces left in the downtown.

Parking will still be available on Harbour Drive, at the city’s parking garage, as well as at private parking garages around the downtown.
