The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was called to the scene of a break and entry in progress at around 2:30 a.m.
The suspect was observed a short distance away in a vehicle, but ran away when approached by police. The RNC surrounded the area and eventually arrested the 20-year-old man, who police described as being highly intoxicated, and took him into custody.
The subsequent investigation indicated the man was driving a vehicle that had allegedly been stolen from the area earlier in the night and that it was believed the man may have broken into a second home before he was arrested.
Due to his level of intoxication, the man was detained until sober and then released to appear in provincial court at a later date.
He has been charged with break and entry, possession of property obtained by crime, impaired driving, and failing the breathalyzer, but police said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are anticipated.
