Dylan Joseph Ryan, one of four men charged in relation to a home invasion in Reidville last fall, has elected to be tried by judge alone if he goes to trial.

Ryan, 20,  was not present when his matters were called at provincial court in Corner Brook Tuesday morning.

The charges include use of a firearm in committing robbery, forcible confinement and being disguised with intent to commit an offence.

Ryan's lawyer elected a judge-alone trial in Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court and opted to first have a preliminary inquiry to see if the matters should be sent to trial.

The preliminary inquiry will take place in provincial court July 6.

The incident, which involved three victims, is alleged to have happened Oct. 8, 2017. A man reported having money stolen from him, while two women claim they were unlawfully confined during the home invasion.

The other three men involved also still have their matters before the courts.

Ricky Leslie Halfyard, 29, has a three-day trial set to start in provincial court today. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of breaking and entering with intent, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, being disguised with intent, use of a firearm in committing robbery, forcible confinement and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

A third man, 23-year-old Tanner Healey, pleaded guilty to charges against him in early March. Healey, who was denied bail after his arrest, entered guilty pleas to charges of break and entering with intent, being disguised with intent and the use of a firearm in committing robbery.

Healey will have a sentencing hearing April 19, after which the Crown has indicated it will withdraw the remaining four charges against him. Those offences include using a firearm during the commission of an offence, two counts of pointing a firearm and forcible confinement.

The fourth man, 21-year-old Jared Healey, has yet to enter any pleas to the charges against him, which include use of a firearm in committing robbery, forcible confinement and being disguised with intent.

His case will be called again April 10.
