Eddie Joyce calls for Western Regional Waste Management chair Don Downer to resign

According to a published media report, Municipal Affairs Minister Eddie Joyce is calling for the resignation of Don Downer as chairperson of Western Regional Waste Management.

Downer, a known supporter of the Progressive Conservative party, was appointed by the former Tory administration in 2011 to head up the authority mandated to develop a waste management strategy for western Newfoundland.

Joyce recently publicly stated that he feels it is time for Downer, who has reportedly moved to the province’s east coast, to step down from the position.

Joyce, who is also the Liberal legislature member for Humber-Bay of Islands, was debating legislation in the House of Assembly and unavailable for an interview with The Western Star as of deadline Tuesday.

Downer was contacted, but refused to comment about Joyce’s demand.

Burgeo Mayor Barbara Barter, who is vice-chairperson of the Western Regional Waste Management’s board of directors, was also contacted Tuesday but said she was not prepared to make any comment until she looked further into what Joyce had to say.
