The body of an elderly woman was discovered today (Thursday) in Kenny’s Pond in St. John’s.
A man out walking his two dogs around the pond discovered the elderly woman in a shallow body of water behind Brentwood Condominiums, which fronts onto Portugal Cove Road in St. John’s.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), St. John’s Regional Fire Department and Eastern Health Paramedics attended the scene and first responders were able to confirm the victim had died from the ordeal.
One RNC officer carried the deceased woman's handbag from the water area and placed it in the trunk of his police patrol vehicle.
RNC Const. Bill Kennedy is also on the scene with his police service dog in case a search of the area may be warranted.
As there are several seniors homes in the area, police are not yet certain if so, but it is possible the victim may be a resident of one of the homes.
A large section of Kenny's Pond is currently closed to pedestrian traffic as it is cordoned off by police while they do their investigation and remove the body from the scene.
Officers with the RNC forensics identification Section are expected to arrive on the scene shortly to aid in the investigation.
More details may be released by the RNC later today.
