A woman's body and the car she was driving have been recovered from the bottom of a cliff in Outer Cove.

The St. John's Regional Fire Department's high-angle rescue team and a boom truck were called to Outer Cove for the recovery operation after emergency crews responded to an accident New Year's Day morning. A vehicle had broken through a guardrail and went over a high cliff.

The car landed on the rocks below, partially in the ocean. A long stretch of guardrail was seen hanging over the dropoff.

The high-angle rescue team members rapelled down the cliff to access the area and proceed with the recovery effort.

The incident occurred on Marine Drive, near an area known as the lookout.

The RNC were also on scene and the Canadian Coast Guard was called in to assist with one of their fast rescue craft which was seen arriving in the cove soon afterwards. It appeared, however, that the boat and personnel were unable to get close enough to the rocky shoreline to access the car.

The road in the area was closed to traffic and continues to be closed until the guardrail can be repaired.
