Katelynn Blundon, 13, stands with Pickles, a seven-month old Holstein calf, after taking third place at the 4-H Calf competition at Farm Field Day at the St. John's Research and Development Centre on Brookfield Road, St. John's, Saturday. Katelynn has been working with this calf for about two months. She will also be participating in another show in Deer Lake later this year. She estimates Pickles presently weighs in at about 600 lbs.

The free family event sponsored by Agriculture Canada played host to a galley of games, exhibits and research demonstrations.

Hundreds turned out to pet the animals, take a hayride, climb or ride a tractor and watch and participate in the 4-H Calf showmanship competition. Some learned to milk a cow, plant a seed or were introduced to insect research and vermicomposting.

The Community Food Sharing Association was on hand to take donations of food or cash.

A bevy of staff and volunteers worked to keep parking available, exhibits humming, and answer questions from curious visitors of all ages.

If you're out and about today, Farm Field Day continues until 5 p.m. this afternoon.
