Federal and provincials funds announced for Lab West initiatives

LABRADOR WEST, NL – Federal and provincial funding for three organizations in Labrador West, totalling more than $574,000, was announced on Wednesday.

The funds will be used to improve the Menihek Nordic Ski Club Association’s facilities, assist the popular Cain's Quest event and support the Labrador West Chamber of Commerce.

The provincial contribution is approximately $253,000, while the federal investment is roughly $321,000.

The Menihek Nordic Ski Club Association is receiving $54,695 through the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation’s Regional Development Fund, while the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s (ACOA) Innovative Communities Fund is contributing a non-repayable investment of $123,373.

The project will include enhancements to the ski club’s infrastructure and product offerings – the chalet and outer building will be renovated, trail development activities will be improved, new equipment will be purchased and marketing will be enhanced.

Cain's Quest Inc. will receive $98,700 from the provincial government and a non-repayable investment of $99,800 from ACOA’s Business Development Program.

The project includes a contribution for a two-year period to market and host Cain’s Quest 2018, a pan-Labrador snowmobile endurance race.

The Labrador West Chamber of Commerce is receiving $99,870 from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation and the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, as well as a non-repayable investment of $99,500 from ACOA’s Business Development Program.

The funds will be used to host the Labrador MINEx mining symposium, a Women in Business conference and a series of five workshops aimed at increasing economic development in the region.
