Newfoundland Power was also called to the scene and cut power to the street of row houses while members of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department battled the blaze at No. 52.
Acting Platoon Chief Tony Renouf said the call came in at 9:22 a.m.
“Our crews were met with heavy smoke when they went in through the doors of the dwelling,” Renouf said. “They made their way to the back of the dwelling and up the stairway where they found heavy smoke and fire. The fire was contained to the second level.
“We were worried about the fire extending when we first got here but we were able to cut off the fire before it got into the two adjacent dwellings.”
No one was home at the time the fire started, Renouf said.
He said there was extensive damage to the dwelling the fire originated in, and the two adjacent houses suffered some smoke damage.
