Firefighters from the Central Fire Station said they could see the smoke billowing into the evening sky from Newtown Road as they were en route to the fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the home was fully charged with fire and smoke was issuing from all areas of the home.

Firefighters quickly donned their breathing apparatus and hauled hoses from the pumpers and hooked them to nearby fire hydrants.

The RNC and Eastern Health paramedics were on the scene, but there were no reported injuries, as the occupants were outside.

An area resident could be heard saying he hopped the fence from his nearby home and went inside the home to see if anyone was inside, but all had escaped form the burning home, which was heavily damaged by smoke, fire and water.

The RNC will investigate the cause of the fire, which caused extensive damage.

The house was the scene of a serious assault on Wednesday night, when a 46-year-old man was taken from the site by ambulance with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.
