A fire at a metal recycling facility kept St. John’s Regional firefighters busy Tuesday night.
The fire erupted at the Newco metal recycling yard on Incinerator Road off the Foxtrap Access Road, sending a column of black smoke into the air as heavy flames burned on a pile of rubble in the yard.
Firefighters initially had trouble accessing the yard as a tractor had been parked at the entrance. Water supply was also an issue as there were no hydrants nearby. Tankers had to fill up at the nearby firefighting training facility.
It took several hours for the blaze to be extinguished.
It was not immediately clear as to how the fire started.
