St. John’s Regional Fire Department platoon chief Robert Fowler said when firefighters arrived on scene, they found a fire burning in the downstairs apartment’s kitchen but were able to knock it down quickly.
He said the upstairs residents as well as the lone resident in the downstairs apartment were out of the home when they arrived.
He also added that there was a dog and two cats in the home when the fire started. The dog was out of the home but the cats were only rescued after the fire was extinguished. They were unharmed and there were no injuries to the residents.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) said this morning in its overnight report the occupants had to be displaced from their home due to the amount of smoke that had built up. The Canadian Red Cross assisted the families in need of shelter, the police said.
The RNC said the quick efforts of the fire department spared the home and that only one room suffered significant damage.
The fire is still under investigation by the RNC.
