Students and staff of Gonzaga High School, along with members of the public, attended the 36th annual prayer service in memory of the 84 men who were killed when the Ocean Ranger offshore drilling rig sank at the Hibernia oilfield during a fierce winter storm on Feb. 15, 1982.

Five of the men killed in the disaster were graduates of Gonzaga — Paul Bursey, Gregory Hickey, Albert Howell, Gerald Power and Craig Tilley.

At Thursday’s service, Lloyd Major, a medic onboard the Ocean Ranger who finished his shift on the rig on Feb. 11, 1982, read aloud the names of the 84 who perished.
