Trudeau said his government supports reconciliation with Indigenous groups, and they'll give due consideration to the formal joint request from Premier Dwight Ball and Innu leaders for federal participation when it comes to the inquiry.
Over the summer, Ball announced that he planned on calling the inquiry because a disproportionate number of Indigenous children get taken into social services custody, and they are often taken outside their Indigenous communities as a result.
When Ball spoke to the federal cabinet earlier this week, he reiterated the request for federal participation.
Trudeau and his cabinet were in St. John's this week for a cabinet retreat ahead of the fall sitting of the House of Commons.
