According to a statement issued this afternoon, on Oct. 21 a member of the public reported a moose being shot in the Notre Dame community. An investigation determined a moose, a female calf, was shot and killed within 300 metres of homes in the Notre Dame community and 1,000 metres of Greenwood Academy, a K-9 school.
“With the assistance of the public, (Fish and Wildlife) officers were able to determine the individual alleged to be responsible,” the statement noted, adding four quarters of moose were seized as part of the investigation.
The case will now be brought to the court in Gander, with charges said to be pending under the Wildlife Act.
“Hunting with a firearm carries with it a great responsibility and hunters are reminded to adhere to all wildlife regulations,” it stated. “Anyone handling or discharging a firearm in an unsafe manner without consideration for the safety of themselves or others will face prosecution, possible fines and prohibition from hunting for up to five years.”
Anyone concerned with the actions of a hunter can report the activity at stoppoaching.ca or to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
