HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY - The Knights of Columbus building in Happy Valley-Goose Bay was destroyed by fire in the early morning hours of November 15. Brad Butler, Fire Chief for the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, said when they got on scene there wasn’t much they could do to save it.
“We got a call around 2:15 in the morning from the RCMP dispatch. They reported a fire at Legare Hall, which is the Knights of Columbus building. The building was fully engulfed.”
He said there was no one in the building so they focused on taking down the fire from the exterior. There was some concern that embers may have drifted onto the roof of a nearby school but NL Hydro got on scene and verified there was no issue with the school.
Butler said the Knights of Columbus had a regular monthly meeting the night before which ended around 9 p.m.
“What they told me early that morning was their routine is to shut the place down, turn the lights off, turn the heat off, lock up and leave,” he said. “So that’s what they did. For the fire to burn that much it had to of started in between that 9 p.m. range and 2:15 when the RCMP got on scene.”
He said that the cause of the fire is still being investigated by RCMP and Fire and Emergency Services.
