St. John's, N.L. — The lockdown at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary (HMP) has been lifted and the facility is back to normal operations.

According to a news released issued today, management is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“It is important that a thorough investigation can occur to ensure the safety and well-being of inmates and staff and make sure a similar incident does not happen again,” Justice minister Andrew Parsons said.

At about 5 p.m. Friday, corrections officers discovered two inmates attempting to escape the prison. Two inmates gained access to an unsupervised area of HMP and tried to escape through a window.

Corrections officers immediately locked down the facility.

“HMP staff took all the ‎appropriate and necessary precautionary measures and we commend them for their work,” Parsons said.

“I have full faith in the staff at HMP and I am confident in their ability to act promptly and efficiently in response to security issues such as this.”
