A home on Jendarmie Place was completely destroyed by fire New Year's morning.

Fred Hollett, co-chief of the Portugal Cove/St. Philips volunteer fire department, says they received the call at 6:53 this morning and by the time their trucks arrived on scene, the fire was quite advanced.

He said their volunteer firefighters responded as quickly as they could considering road conditions at that time of the morning. He said roads in the area were snow covered and extremely slippery. They also called for backup from the St. John's Regional fire department who helped them establish a water supply from a hydrant on Dogberry Hill Road Extension about five hundred metres away.

Firefighters had to be called back to the scene at about 1 p.m. to extinguish a hot spot that flared up as an RNC fire investigator examined the remnants of the home.

The two occupants of the home as well as the family dogs escaped the blaze without any injuries.
